Festival of Cricket 2014

The 26th annual celebration of the biggest Summer Festival for Sri Lankans in the United Kingdom was held on Sunday, 20th July, 2014 at the picturesque Merchant Taylors' School grounds, Moor Park, Northwood, Herts. Sri Lankans in the UK spent a wonderful sunny summer’s day enjoying excellent cricket, with fun and excitement prevalent at inter-school Big Matches, combined with a very happy party atmosphere throughout the day with live band music, UK and Sri Lankan trade stalls, International hot food stalls, Beer tent, and children's entertainment.

The event officially opened with a flag hoisting ceremony and an extravagant cultural show organised by Sri Lanka Tourism-UK. His Excellency Dr. Chris Nonis, the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in the United Kingdom graced the occasion as The Chief Guest. Other prominent guests were The Chairman, Three Rivers District Council, Mr. Harsha Abeywickrama Chairman, Bank of Ceylon, Mr. Nimal Fernando-CEO/Executive Director, Bank of Ceylon (UK) Ltd., Jeremy Soertsz-Country Manager, SriLankan Airlines, Chairman Fairway holdings, Mr. Nalin Perera-The Country Manager-Sri Lanka Tourist Board.

It was reminiscent of school days, at the 28 FOC member School Marquees of Ananda, De Mazenod, Dharmaraja, Dharmasoka, DS Senanayake, Holy Cross, Isipathana, Joseph Vaz, Kingswood, Mahanama, Mahinda, Maris Stella, Nalanda, Rahula, Richmond, Royal, St. Aloysius, St. Anthony's, St. Benedicts, St. Joseph's, St. Michael's, St. Peter's, St. Sebastian's, St. Thomas, Thurstan, Trinity, Wesley and Zahira colleges. It was also an opportunity to meet long lost school mates, meet new friends and enjoy a day of Cricket.

Since its inception, FOC has been supporting Charities in Sri Lanka. All proceeds of the FOC are divided amongst the participating schools to purchase educational and sports materials, equipment for their schools and to donate towards scholarship funds in Sri Lanka. Proceeds from the FOC Grand Charity raffle and other charity projects are donated to Cancer Institute of Sri Lanka and Cancer Research - UK. The proceeds of the Grand Charity Raffle, this year will be donated to three rural hospitals in SriLanka, and the Cancer Research UK and Anthony Nolan Blood Cancer Charity.

The vibrant trade stalls entertained the guests with complimentary gifts and special offers. The food stalls were jam-packed with masses of people enjoying the varieties of food. In addition, the FOC hospitality lounge catered by Rising Star Hotel provided a space for those entrepreneurs who entertained clients or friends on the day, whilst watching some exciting cricket and relaxing, sampling the culture and the cuisine of Sri Lanka. Sky High and Sigiri Band took turns to entertain with popular Sri Lankan and Western Music. Sunil Fernando provided musical entertainment in the hospitality lounge.

Children's Merry-go-round, Slider, A Bouncy Castle kept kids bouncing all day long whilst parents had some freedom to enjoy their day at the festival.
The Bankers to the nation - Bank of Ceylon's continuous main sponsorship has been of immense support and encouragement to the Festival of Cricket and for Sri Lankans living in the UK. Sri Lanka.

The National Carrier SriLankan Airlines for their support during the last many years, and this year. SriLankan Airlines also, extended its qualities of warmth, caring and friendliness to the FOC for the 26th time, co-sponsoring the event, and providing the Return tickets to Sri Lanka to raise funds for the FOC Grand Charity raffle.
Sri Lankan Tourism, Fairway Sky Gardens, were the proud co-sponsors of the FOC this year, and celebrated their participation giving away prizes and surprises. The President Sisira Kumara Perera together with the Festival of Cricket Executive Committee 2014, extend their grateful thanks to one and all who sponsored, supported and attended the Festival of Cricket Silver Jubilee Carnival 2014.
